Songwriting Tips And Help For Writing Songs And Lyrics
i wrote lyrics and came up with a melody in my head but i can't write instrumental music?
Filed under: How to write lyrics

i love to write and recently i've been trying to write lyrics. I hit the gold mine last night and was really happy and just videotaped me singing the lyrics with a melody i had stuck in my head. only problem is i can't make up anything for instrumental music since i didn't write down any notes in the first place. it all came from my head. help!

if you remember the melody, you can do two things:
1. find someone who plays the piano and can read and write music.
sing the melody to them (slowly) and see if they can work out the notes.
ask them to write it down and give it to you.

2. find a keyboard or piano somewhere.
sing the first note of the melody to yourself.
test the notes on the piano until you find the one you are singing.
(you need to know that C is the note that comes before the two black notes together. theres a pic at the bottom if you dont know where C is.)

the notes go ABCDEFG then back to A.
work out what note you have just played and write down what note it was.
do this with all the notes in the song until youve finished.
(it will take a while but its worth it!!)
note: as long as you remember the rythym in your head, the song will work.
i cant teach you how to work out rythym that takes a lloooooong time. but write next to the notes arrows to show whether its a long or short note and you will be fine.

good luck!!
hope this helps!
