Even though my main instrument is the Guitar, I use the Piano for composing... Usually, I just sit there improvising until I find something I like, then expand it. Once I get the music down, then I add the lyrics... and finally I put it all together and play it on the Guitar.
References :
print out some blank sheet music.
then fiddle around on your instrument. i also recommend using a piano.. they really help!

finally when you find a combination of notes you like record it on the staff paper.

if your looking into adding lyrics i find that its easier to make up lyrics and then a melody.
good luck!
References :
I don't really know if anybody can tell you how to write songs, because everyone's different.
I just sort of sit there playing around with different chord structures and pickings and the words just sort of flow... But for inspiration I usually just immerse myself in music. I just sit and listen and usually gives me cool ideas and makes me want to make my own.

A passing knowledge of music theory helps too, to help in starting you off with song structure and keys.
References :
first pen down your thoughts like a story
make corrections
then try to put your thoughts in a symmetrical way
remember a poem doesnt always needs to be rhyming
try to keep your lines as short but descriptive as possible
