Filed under: How to write songs

so how do i write guitar songs and how do i come up with a good beat/music to it?

how do i compose music or w/e

if u dont completely understand me just check back in a bit ill update

I'm not sure about the whole "you have to read music' thing.

The most celebrated songs of the second half of the 20th Century were written primarily on guitar and I think you'll find very few who read music.

I'm not downplaying the skill at all…I just don't believe it to be necessary in order to come up with songs that are moving, inspiring, intricate, beautiful or rocked out to HELL.

What I would suggest however, is just relaxing with your guitar and doodling around with chords and notes…hum along to the sounds you're making. Sometimes words shape themselves around the humming and prompt to a melody. Let it happen instinctively. If you get frustrated with it, don't push. Just let it happen.

Edit - I was responding to another answerer who said you needed to learn to read music, but he/she deleted their answer…so some of my initial comments have no frame of reference.

The most important thing is that you have to know how to read music….I hope that you can do that…..most guitar players today only read tab. You could play around with chord progressions and see what you come up with. A lot of composers say some of their songs happened by accident, just sitting and fooling around !!!!!!….I've hear a lot of composers say that they were just playing around one day with a few little chords progressions and they came up with a melody that they turned into a famous song. .Another thing that you must have is talent….not everyone can write music, even if they have the desire to do so ….You should have a knowledge of music theory, know your scales and chord progressions, and of course know how to put them on paper !!!!! If your still in high school think about going to college and study composing.
